REGISTRATION FOR THE 2018 EVENT WILL OPEN IN FEBRUARY

GENERAL GRAN FONDO INFORMATION

DIRECTIONS: Take I-25 to downtown Colorado Springs. Exit I-25 at exit 141 to Highway 24 West. Follow Highway 24 West to Cascade, approximately 10 miles. Turn left at the Cascade traffic signal and follow the signs to the Pikes Peak Highway.
 
GATEWAY FEES: All registered cyclists will receive a pass for free admission through the Pikes Peak Highway Gateway. Race support members will be charged the normal Pikes Peak Highway fees: 
  • Ages 16 & Older = $10 per person
  • Ages 6-15 = $5 per person
  • Family Plan (up to 5 spectators) = $40
PARKING: Parking will be at multiple locations near the Start Line.
 
COURSE: This is the same course used by The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb since 1916. Cyclists participating in the race and gran fondo will negotiate 156 turns and climb over 4,700 feet in 12.42 miles/20km to reach the summit.  
 
START: The Start Area is located approximately 6 miles inside the Pikes Peak Gateway, just past Crystal Reservoir. No vehicle traffic will be allowed above the Start Area until 9:00 am except for race officials and operations.

CLOTHING DROP OFF: We will transport your warm clothing bag to the Summit. Bags should include a name tag and be dropped at the Start Area prior to the start of the Gran Fondo rides.
 
BRAKE CHECK: A MANDATORY brake check will be conducted at the Glen Cove gate by Pikes Peak Highway staff for all participants descending from the Summit prior to 9:15 am.
 
REST AREAS: There will be hydration and snack stations at the Festival/Awards Area, Glen Cove, and at the Summit (see Maps page). Please bring a water bottle and remember NOT to litter. We have a unique opportunity to ride our bikes to the summit of Pikes Peak and we ask you to be considerate of others. 
 
TECHNICAL SUPPORT: There will be a limited mechanical support from the SAG wagon which will follow competitive cyclists from the Start to the Summit.  There is emergency radio support in all vehicles on the course and at designated points along the route (see Maps page).
 
TIME LIMITPikes Peak Highway will be open to vehicle traffic at Crystal Reservoir starting at 9:00 am. Cyclists must finish by 9:45 am to be officially timed and placed. Cyclists who have not reached Devil's Playground as of 9:15 am will be asked to abort their ride and follow an escort vehicle downhill. This vehicle will be specially marked and will lead cyclists down the mountain to the Festival/Awards Area. Cyclists that encounter the escort vehicle descending from the Summit are required to abort their ride and join this procession. This is MANDATORY as per the use agreement with the Pikes Peak Highway and due to safety concerns with uphill vehicle traffic after 9:00 am.
 
SHUTTLE SERVICE: Challenge Unlimited - Pikes Peak by Bike will be offering a shuttle service from the Summit to Glen Cove for $10 (cash only) on race day on a first-come, first-served basis.

SPECTATORS: Not allowed on the course for this event.
 
WEATHER: The race and rides will be held rain or shine; The Race Director and Pikes Peak Highway staff have the authority to cancel or stop the race and rides at their discretion due to weather or other concerns. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS. Participants and spectators can monitor the weather forecast on Pikes Peak through the following sources:
AWARDS: Medals will be awarded to the top Men's, Women's and Juniors (U19) finishers (1st-3rd) in the grad fondo, and for the top three finishers in each of the USAC race categories for those participating in the competitive race.  There will be cash prizes for the top three finishers in the SM/SW Pro 1-2-3 Cats.
 
RIDE CATEGORIES: Gran Fondo rides are open to cyclists of all ages and skill levels and cycles/bicycles of all kinds including: tandems, elipticals, recumbents, handcycles and unicycles. Cyclists with these conveyances will ride with traditional bicycles based on the stage/distance they register for. Visit Registration page for more information.  The competitive race will include the following categories - M/W BVI Tandem, M/W Para Hand Cycle, M/W Jr U19, SW 3, SM 3-4, SM/SW 4-5, SM/SW Pro 1-2-3, MW 40+, MW 50+. MW 60+, MM 40+ 4-5, MM 40+ 3-4, MM 40+ 1-2-3, MM 50+ 4-5, MM 50+ 1-2-3, MM 60+, MM 70+.
 
TIMING: Timing chips will be used for Gran Fondo and race participants.

Start Line to Summit (12.5 miles/20km)
 
  • Professionals, hill climb enthusiasts and first-time Summiteers
  • Cyclists may ride down to the Festival/Awards Area or pay a fee for transport   
  • Cyclists who have not finished as of 9:45 am will need to abort their ascent attempt. An escort vehicle will be specially marked and will lead riders from the Summit to the Festival/Awards Area. Riders that encounter the escort vehicle descending from the Summit are required to abort their ride and join this procession. This is MANDATORY as per the use agreement with the Pikes Peak Highway and due to safety concerns with uphill vehicle traffic after 9:00 am.
